The Jesse Owen Park in Reseda is home to a duck pond and recreational center. It also has a basketball court, community room, playgrounds and sports fields. Recently renovated, the park features a new playground that pays tribute to Mr. Owens, and includes images of him at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin along with track themed play events depicted in the unitary rubber fall surfacing. A Rollerslide and a Twisty Slide offer inclusive play opportunities for children of all abilities. A Net Climber and Swiggle Knots allow kids to challenge their balance and flexibility. The playground is complemented with SkyWays integrated shade and DuMor site furnishings.
In addition to the new playground, the park has a large outdoor pool and a number of picnic areas for families. The park is also known for its bird watching. The swimming pool is open to the public during the summer months and the picnic areas are available year round.
Located at 9651 South Western Avenue, the park is part of the Lake Balboa City Council District 8. The community had experienced a surge in gang-related homicides in the area and a meeting was held in September to discuss strategies for dealing with the problem.
One of the strategies included organizing a series of events for youth in the neighborhood. One of the events was called Humanitarian Day. This event was organized by Rizilient, a local organization that works with at-risk youth. The event was also supported by the ILM Foundation, Watts Life United and several other faith-based groups in the area.
The event was an enormous success, and the participants were proud of their accomplishments. They were grateful for the support from the local community, and expressed a desire to continue the work of the organization in the future. The organizers hope that the event will be an annual event in the future. They want to see the city and community come together to make the neighborhood a safer place for everyone. They also plan to hold a similar event next summer. They will invite community members and organizations to participate in the event. The event will feature free food, toys, medical and dental screenings and activities. The event is expected to draw up to 1,000 people. This is a wonderful way to give back to the community.
